Ingrown Feathers? Now with pictures!

That does look odd..Maybe someone will take a look now who's seen this before! My husband thinks I'm nuts always talking about chicken poop, and bumblefoot, and other crazy thing I never thought I'd be doing! Join the club!!!
 
Well, you've had over 80 "views"...I'm guessing no one has experienced it before. Did you search using keywords? or on Google?

Did the feathers that came out of the original lancings appear to be forming normally? If so, I'd wait to see if there was any swelling and obvious discomfort around the area. The only time I've ever seen this was on a show BBW tom, again victim of a bully, and we just pulled the tips of the feathers and they all came right out. This was only after we noticed obvious discomfort, my cousin ended up not taking him to the livestock show even though he was one of her 'best' for the pen. Other than that, I wouldn't know what to tell you about it. Just let it be for now.
 
I pulled the latest two out today. The feathers were not forming normally. They were all curled up and waxy. One that I didn't pull out, but left in her skin got fluffy when it dried, but retained it's curled up apperance.
Here is a picture of one of the feathers I removed today. You can see the waxy stuff on the feather.


It pulled out very easily, and the hen seemed relieved that it was gone.
In any case, I seem to have made a friend. She likes to sit in my lap now. Hopefully no more of these form!

I have a silkie with an injured foot I've been treating for a few weeks and one of the first things I noticed when I checked her whole body was that she also had about 6 ingrown feathers on her chest/ under her wings! They looked a little different than your hens feathers, were curled around right under the skin and very visible. It just took a little picking like an ingrown hair and they came out easily. Because silkie feathers are so fluffy and movable I think that helped. Your girls bumps look like they probably hurt. I would suggest to soak her bottom in a solution of warm water and epsom salt for about 20ish minutes and it will soften her skin and feathers right up to remove.
As for what to do in the future when they start to grow in again.... im not sure?

I am really curious about this! My sister has one chicken that seems to be plucking the others and some of them have large patches of feathers missing. I wonder if she will face this when they get rid of the bad girl.
 
my silkies all 3 get these ingrown feathers and yes i pull them out sometimes i use tweezers i noticed my baby limping and saw the feather curled around back into the skin when i pulled it out it was 3 inches long also a big white bump indicates this also i just scratch the white and pull the feather my birds get a sigh of releif but if you pull one out remember to check it when it grows in to make sure its not ingrowing again this is usually on the foot i never seen it on the body and i comb them daily but now im going to look.
 
I have a problem with my self blue d'uccle on his bottom of the foot with ingrown feathers. Someone stepped on him and broke his toe curling it under. So i can't show him now. But You have to remove the feather follicle inorder to stop it from continuing. Just get tweezers go further into the skin and pull the cylinder out that holds the feather in. Once it all grows back it should solve the problem.
