OK I realllllyy need some help my chick got bit by my nephews cat,and the chick was fine a little while ago but now is sleeping and his breathing has slowed I REAllY need some advice ASAP!
Well, that's bad. ARe there any visible injuries? Keep it warm and quiet. I'm sorry, I wouldn't try to do anything else just yet besides making sure it has food and water. How old is it? Are there other chicks?
im not sure how old it is and there are other chicks but they are not hurt.I think the chick may be a week old or so we bought home from a feedstore
thnx for the advice
I would let him 'sleep it off' a little make sure he has access to food/water. Maybe some cooked egg. and vitamins and electrolights if your really cautious! cat saliva contains a lot of harmful bacteria. I would say disinfect it ASAP then let him sleep!! then maybe antibiotics at any signs of infection.
ETA: I went through this about a month and a half ago. Chick lived another week, but it didn't end well
Cat bites are very filthy. They carry tons of bacteria and can transmit disease. If the chick was bitten, sure as anything the bite will become infected. The chick must be put on antibiotics. How do I know? Because a cat bit me and the doctor said that cat bites are very dangerous and people who don't get treatment often develop life threatening infections.
I agree with fancbrd4me02...cat bites and scratches can be fatal. I would thoroughly clean with soap and water, then irrigate (flush repeatedly) with betadine if you have access to it, (iodine watered down is almost the same thing). Put triple antibiotic cream (the kind without pain relief, like neosporin) on the wound as soon as possible. I would also get some broad spectrum antibiotic to give internally. If you have a vet call and ask if he can sell you a small amount of antibiotic used for cat bites.
My husband was bit and scratched by one of our cats that was scared by a stray cat and had to go on Augmentic for 10 days, as cat bites can turn very serious if untreated.
Good luck with your baby.
I agree with the treatments above but the baby is in shock and I don't think it would do him much good to treat immediately; being a baby he's not used to being handled and it might contribute to his decline. If it's just a small wound, it wont hurt him to wait for a bit; before you wash and disinfect it.
