Injured chick advice needed please

Thank you Laura !!

I've left a mixture of growers pellets and chick feed and a small amount of seed by puddings bed together with a bowl of her water.
Her next feed I will offer the egg and yoghurt mix and see how we go :)
I think she's pretty much staying put in between probably the leg and the puncture will be pretty sore. I'm just so glad she's taking the food herself. I'm calling her a she but I'm not sure lol
Thanks for all your great advice

I will update as we go on xx

Happy to hear that she's doing well!

Heya :)

Shes pretty much the same although she did take one little drink herself from her water bowl.
Shes not trying to put her foot to the floor so she sits on my knee and eats in a sitting position.

This morning I,ve bathed her and popped more ointment on and she's had her anti-biotic. I made her a little nest with a box turned on its side and a really soft blanket. She has a small teddy for comfort and she snuggles up to it.
Although her food is within reach without her moving, the water isnt quite so near so I,m keeping u the 2hourly feeds.
Her wounds look pretty ok and I think I feel a little positive about them. I,m worried about her leg which has the puncture wound at the thigh and the swollen and lacerated knee. I,m really hoping she will attempt to put her foot to the floor over the next few days.

If it was broken, what should i do ? I,ve read that it's possible to splint it, but at what point do I go down that road ?
I examined it pretty thoroughly and there didn't seem to be anything obvious but then I have broken my ankle before and I could still walk on it ...
At the moment I,m thinking to give it a few days. It's obviously gonna be sore as the puncture, laceration and swelling are all on the same leg so I,m gonna give it some time.

poor little thing :(
Thanks for any advice xx

It's a positive sign its eating and drinking. If its a break a splint is nessesary to keep break aligned for it to knit together. Without X-ray there's no way of knowing for sure follow your instinct I'd give 24 more hours if no attempt to use the leg is made splint it but if its still extending leg to stretch maybe leave abit longer as it maybe the puncture wounds that are keeping it up and need time to heel. Good luck pudding !

Poor little chick. It is a good thing that she's eating and drinking; that means that she at least isn't in too much pain or too ill. Can you feel any breaks in the bone? My best guess that she is just sore, or it is possible that a tendon was injured, which is causing her to not stand well. For a broken bone to heal properly, it should be splinted.

Thank you all for the replies you are all angels !!
I will see what tomorrow brings and if by the end if the day she's not putting her foot down I will splint it.
Might need a few pointers on how to do that tho ... I have a wooden lollipop stick and some medical tape but do you splint it top to bottom with a straight knee ? And how will she sit ? Do you use some gauze so the tape diesnt pull at the skin and feathers. ?

Off to do another feed :) it's like having a baby!! At least she sleeps thro the night lol ;)

Love you all xx

Shabana, chickens are superbly reslient animals. I have one hen that had all the skin torn from her neck, head to shoulders, all the way around, by a neighbor's dog, and she's now fine, even if the skin grew back without feathers. She's just my little no-neck.

I also have another hen who was stepped on by a goat, and I'm pretty sure her hip was fractured. At first she couldn't walk at all, and when I found her after she was wounded, she was dehydrated and in shock. I kept her in a tub inside when I wasn't home, and when I was home we would sit outside together with her sitting in the grass and eating whatever I could put in front of her, and I would carry her with me everywhere I went. She now hobbles around just fine and rules the roost. She can't fly, and she can't hop very far, but she free-ranges and handles herself just fine otherwise. She's the hen in my profile picture, and the time we spent together while she healed was an amazing bonding experience, so be prepared for that.

Heya
Thanks for the lovely reply Kyzmette and for the support :)

My son helped me splint puddings leg yesterday. We used a cotton bud wrapped in cotton wool and taped. We aligned her whole leg as I read on the forum to splint above and below the break. (Thankyou to the lady called Kathy who is very knowledgeable when it comes to chicken health and medicine )
She seems a bit awkward when she's trying to sit but once she gets comfy she's ok :)
She's eating well and starting to take food by herself although I am still doing the two hourly thing because I like to see her eat and drink and its nice for her to have a bit if company.
Her wounds look clean and dry so I think we are on the right road thanks to you guys !

I will keep updating but I really wanted to say a huge thank you to you all because without this forum and your help I would have been lost xxx

Pudding is doing really well, she's still on one foot but is eating and drinking very well. She croons to me and snuggles her teddy. I'm hoping that in a week or two she will try to use her leg.

My question is she's started to sneeze a little so I've put the radiator on in her bedroom to warm the room a bit as we are getting pretty cold weather in the UK at the moment. Her bed is a cat igloo so it's warm and furry but she is only 9 weeks old so will that be ok ? My chicks are in the coop with two broodies so I've not used heat lamps before. She's still on antibiotics so will that help if she has a bit of cold ?

Many thanks x
