Last Wednesday one of our dogs got ahold of one of our hens. He ripped some of her chest and up close to her throat, but at the time we thought she was okay. We cleaned and dressed it with silver to keep the wound from drying up. We thought she was okay because she was eating, drinking, and pooing, but when we went to change the dressing we found that her crop was ripped and oozing food. What should we do? Should we try to clean it and sew it up or should we just put her down? *Note that it has been five days since the attack.*

I don't know, maybe it would be kinder to her to put her down🙁Welcome to backyard chickens! It's a lovely community!

I hope she's well enough to give her a chance🙁

She's eating, drinking, and acting normally. Chickens have amazing healing ability for skin wounds and lacerations. The only problem that I foresee is the fact that 5 days have passed and wound edges may already be healing.

:welcome sorry for the circumstances. I would abrade the edges of the wound and stitch her crop back together. If the tear is not excessive she still might heal. Give her a chance. Good luck.

Thanks we just didn't know if it would heal because of how large the hole is. We will try and stitch it back, but the hole is bigger than my thumb.

End of your thumb or length of your thumb ? In crop tears, smaller is definitely better.

I would ask this be moved to the Emergency forum. We will also need pictures to give advice on how to proceed.
