Hi all. Just a warning some may find content disturbing or upsetting. I do aoplogise Im advance. I have an injured chicken which survived a fox attack and is the only survivor of 14 chickens. 6 are missing and the rest were lying around and their heads were missing. they are not my chickens. They were recently bought by my brother inlaw for eggs as we live together with him on a couple acres of land. He forgot to close the door to the coop last night and the worst has happened. I am guessing it was a fox. As I see foxes all the time at night. We looked around the chicken area and thats when I noticed one still had its head and then I realised it was breathing. my BIL wanted to end its life then and there as to put it out of its suffering. But there were no visible wounds it was just laying there cold and breathing heavily...I assumed it had an internal injury..but it had already been hours since the attack and she was still alive so I just want to try to help her... she had ants all over here so I tried to rinse her with warm water to get them off and also to warm her body up as she has been lying in the cold rain all night.. she can only stand on her feet for a few seconds and is having much difficulty breathing..she is also sometimes coughing up clear slime and has her eyes closed pretty much all the time and her head is floppy. She is also making a garggling sound when she breaths. I know this sounds terrible and i am sorry if i offend any body but i truly want to see if i can help her... she seems to now have a visible sort of bubble on her neck area and her neck looks bent or broken i dont know
.. i cannot see any puncture wounds. Im thinking she may have a colapsed lung... only because of the noise she is making and the deep heavy breathing. I cannot afford a vet.. i wish I just knew more about chickens and first aid.. i have her on a warm towel with the heater on and i blow dryed her after the rinse because she was so cold. She jumped at first at the sound of the dryed poor thing but then she seemed to like it as she fully relaxed.. poor girl please help. I will try post pics of her and her neck.
