Injured chickens after dog attack

Oh I'm so sorry We lost our whole flock to a mink/weasel a couple of months ago, and it was devastating! I hope your others recover quickly.

I lost a couple of chickens last year to a neighbor's dog but when I contacted him, he was so good about it. He wanted to know what he owed me, what it would cost to replace her (it was just one at first). I told him $25 and he whipped out his wallet and paid me on the spot and promised to keep the dog confined. Well, a couple weeks later the dog got out and got another one. I wouldn't have known right away but the dog took the chicken home! The man came over immediately, apologized and paid up - and got rid of the dog. We have become pretty good friends. He lives about half a mile from us so we don't see him often but he's certainly an example of a good neighbor. So ... some dog owners do right by their neighbors. I wish they all did!

I'm glad your neighbor did right. I know most are good and it ducks when there is one that isn't.

I came out of my house yesterday and found a dog that we have never seen before 2 days ago chewing on one of my hens. I got over to find her dead so we went looking for the other 11 hens. After a 6 hour search we found 3 dead and 5 injured and 4 not injured. They range in the ages of 6 months to 5 years old. The injured ones (some worse than others) all have tears and holes in their back and one also has a broken wing on top of those injuries she is 5 yrs old and the one that is injured the worst is wheezing and i think she might have a punctured lung she is also 5yrs old, the other 3 injured are 1is 2 yrs old and 2 are 6 months. I am frustrated and very saddened by all of this and vet is not an option. All 5 injured made it through the night. I do not have any pictures yet. By the time we found them all and put the survivors up it was dark out. Will be doing a more thorough look at them today and cleaning them up more. Any help is appreciated.

Day 5 Update : our 3 injured are doing a bit better day by day. Got their wounds cleaned up and feathers trimmed more yesterday. Got the heat lamp out for them a couple days ago between the injuries and bald spots it's also been cooler and rainy out. I got some new photos of their injuries and they're still all bug free thankfully. I think Mocha's injured wing is possibly just spranged she's not dragging it on floor any more but it still hangs quite low. I couldn't get a picture of it but when I was cleaning her i checked her wing and under it and it's pretty bruised at the top at the joint. They are all a bit more active than they were and our 4 uninjured girls have been real gentle with them all. They still won't leave their enclosure but I know it'll take a while after that huge tragedy.

Update on my girls day 9 Sunday/ yesterday : Mocha is the first two photos wounds are looking good and she's holding her injured wing up a bit more which is great but still hurting and I'm sure it might take longer to heal than the wounds. Unfortunately she tried to fly to avoid me grabbing her to clean and check her wounds but luckily I don't think she injured it any more but i know she was hurting a bit more after. Still bug free for all the girls thankfully.
Second photos are Violet, her wound is looking great. The black on her tail is scab and some feathers but I haven't wanted to try and remove them cause I don't want to take the chance of making it bleed again. I noticed today that it was pretty much all off of her tail. I think it was bothering her and she pulled it off. It's a little pink/red but not bleeding. She successfully started to fly again on Friday. So glad.
Last but not least is Layla the baby. Her wound is looking great. She's got some feathers stuck in a couple places in her scabs and some are starting to come loose at the ends. I was going to trim them but forgot to grab scissors so I decided to wait. I try to cause a little stress as possible since they have enough as it is. She had quite a bit of dirt all stuck on there from a dust bath I'm assuming but I got it all cleaned off. Still giving all the girls probiotics and electrolytes including the uninjured. Thank you to everyone for all the advice and well wishes I greatly appreciate it.

Looking good! I understand it's a good idea to either alternate days of electrolytes and plain water, or else have plain water always available so they can themselves choose which they prefer. I believe I read earlier today that straight electrolyte water all the time is not good for them. Otherwise, looks lke they are recovering nicely!

Thank you. I don't do electrolytes every day and when I do they also have 2 containers with plain water around always. And the probiotics i just sprinkle some in with their feed every few days or so. Thanks for the advice though I didn't actually know that. I'm also still doing aspirin every once in a while just going off of how their acting. Like yesterday I have Mocha some after she tried to fly because she was acting like it hurt after.
