Hi all!
I have a predicament with one of my Plymouth White Rocks, and I'm not sure how to stop it!!! I have 38 birds, and they are mostly free range. While out foraging one of my girls scratched the red part above her waddle on a thorn branch. (?) We swabbed (Q-tip) the area with hydrogen peroxide and then put a dab of neosporin on it. The cut was not huge so I thought it would probably heal fine. I really did the neosporin more for protection against germs. This morning when I went out I saw her scratch it, and there was a blood stain down her feathers from it.
I'm going to clean it out again, but I'm not sure how to prevent her from scratching that area .... I once had an injured bird that I was told to put a t-shirt on to prevent it from irritating the wound by scratching, but this wound is not in the ideal place for that!
I'm at a loss and I really don't want the wound getting too big or infected. The bird is acting perfectly fine ... eating, roosting, walking around, pooping ... totally normal, but this one scratch. I hate to have her end up with a problem from irritating herself and I don't want to make the problem worse ... maybe the hydrogen peroxide/neosporin wasn't a good idea with a cut that small??
All of a sudden today I have also been noticing small black dots on a few of theirs combs, and a couple wattles. The injury to this particular birds comb didn't look suspicious to me, but after reading all these threads about the fowl pox, I'm wondering if she had a black spot that she's irritating. She does have a few small black spots on her comb. I'm out collecting eggs a couple times a day, and I take the chickens in each night and let them have a generous serving of scratch. I count them all and pet many of them. Definitely did not notice any wart like things, or white spots on any of them.
I also have been keeping a close look out for mites and lice ... no signs of them either. A little more time will answer the fowl pox question, but I'm still not sure how to get my girl from scratching herself.
Hopefully, I can take pictures of some of the birds and post them tomorrow.
Anybody have any suggestions?
