If she is inside, away from flies, covering the wound ought not to be so important. Just keep it as clean as possible, rinse frequently, and watch often. Some people use Blu-Kote, I haven't used it yet, myself.
I think if she has the Veterycin I'd use that only. Amiga.

Okay, Spotty Warrior Princess is doing better. She is eating and drinking more. It seems a little painful for her to walk, so she is shuffling around a bit, but she is pepping up. I am at work but my mother put her outside in a small "pack and play" area because her "mate" Mary was quacking up a storm because Spotty WP wasn't around. We have trimmed the feathers around the area and are cleaning the wound and using the spray.

I know that sometimes a bird can seem to be recuperating but can later die due to internal injuries or infection. Are there are tips for what to look for, especially for an infection? I don't believe we have heard back from the vet yet as to whether the avian specialist is in.

You can get Penicillin at feed stores and add to her water for 8-10 days or give injections. smell will pretty much tell you something maybe going on, and please if you put her outside you are running a big risk of flies getting into the wound and laying eggs which will bring maggots and they are deadly. Maybe Mary could come inside and visit instead. Keep spraying the Veterycin at least 4-6 times a day. that will really help keep the wound clean. but won't keep files out, you'd need to get something like Swat at the feed store but not sure if you could put it on an open wound probably only around the edges and don't know if that would keep the flies out. But very happy to hear she is doing better.

Hi, Spotty spent the night at the vet on tuesday night where she got a shot of antibiotics and had her wound professionally cleaned. She seemed peppier on Wednesday and Thursday but today seems a little listless and won't eat even her peas (! She ate them on Monday-Wednesday with great excitement). Any thoughts? She hasn't seen Mary except for an hour or so on Monday. Any chance she just misses her mate?

How does her wound look, no infection setting in? Probably would be a good idea to let her and Mary have some time together Mary may be able to get her to eat.

We brought Mary in for 30 minutes each day of the weekend, but Mary has so much more energy and continually looks like she is going to attack Spotty, so we could only allow short supervised visits. When Mary was inside, Spotty did eat a little more than otherwise, but otherwise even her favorites like peas and watermelon don't get eaten. She has pepped back up since my last post, moving around and making a little bit of noise, but the lack of eating is worrisome. The wound, which looks like a dog took a bit out of her "stomach" skin (which is probably what happened), seems to be growing new "skin" and there has been no foul odor. The vet said this wound needs to heal from within, so I'm hoping that there isn't an issue.

Is she drinking water good? if so maybe pick up some Nutri Drench for poultry and start adding it to her water. it can also be given by mouth the only thing it needs to be put at front of inside bill not put down the throat. But this may give her a jump start in eating.

My overly cautious parents brought Spotty to the vet again while I was at work. Apparently the wound was originally several inches deep but seems to have missed any major organs. Spotty is doing much better and has started eating with the help of something similar to the NutriDrench mentioned above ("rooster booster" it was called). Thanks for the tips everyone! Mary has been more calm in her visits with Spotty as well. Mary also started hiding her eggs in some bushes while Spotty has been living inside. I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but they usually lay their eggs in their house. In any event all seems to be going well and I wanted to thank everyone for all the help!
