Hi everyone. My Pekin was attacked by a dog almost a week ago. I have cleaned her wounds and she is healing and getting around pretty good now. However, she's no longer quacking. She opens her beak and it is almost like a panting that she is doing. She was a very spastic duck prior to the attack. Is this somehow a repercussion to the attack? Shes definitely a bit depressed, and I thought this might just be part of that. I miss hearing her quack! Is there something else I can do at this point, other than checking daily on her and bringing her water where she's laying?

If she seems to have pretty normal behavior like the other ducks (like eating and drinking regularly, walking normally, etc.), I think she's okay.

Good luck!!

I thought she was OK too, but unfortunately she passed away last night :( I'm not sure what to do with the body, I don't necessarily want to bury her in case another animals comes and digs her up, that would be traumatizing for my 5yo son. Any suggestions?

I'm so sorry that happened.

Thank you! We thought she'd survive it.She was doing great yesterday. I was going to get 2 more this Spring anyway, so at least my other duck will have some friends soon. She seems extra lonely out there now.

Thanks all!

I apologize if I in anyway mislead you. I am not a duck expert; I was just using my best judgment. I am so sorry you lost the duck!

I am not sure whether this would work for you or not, but my husband and I cremate all our flock that we lose. We have a fire pit and we get a roaring fire going leaving spot to place them and then cover them respectfully with wood so you do not see them burn but they are reduced to ash and we put that back into the run so they are always with the rest of their flock. We could not bear to bury them or throw them away with predators around, so that has been our compromise to send off our lost babies. Just a suggestion. I would not let children be there until you have covered them with wood because otherwise it can be rough, but its quick.

Today when we went to out our duck in the pen for the night they did not come!?! We have a small pond and so do our neighbors so they go back and forth every day and forage, swim, and just hang out. I was concerned that I could see them just sitting in the grass next to my neighbors pond for a long time. We walked over and unfortunately my husband stepped on a new egg (still soft shell) so I assumed she decided to nest there. But they would not budge and come home. They avoided us. And wouldn't even eat their treats. He is being very aggressive (he was never real friendly) since we got her. He keeps pecking and mating with her even though she just doesn't seem right. She is leaning to her right and also swimming with a lean. She is also quiet, not peeping at all. We tried till way after dark and finely gave up. They have never not been waiting at their pen at dinner time.
