Yesterday I picked up a Bielefelder cockerel who has an injured eye. The seller said one of his other roosters had fought with him, and that he was now blind in that eye.

I rinsed it slightly with saline, and put a little antibiotic ointment on it ( no pain relief), but it looks pretty mangled. Is there anything else I should do?
He acts fine otherwise. Is there a chance he’ll regain sight in his eye?
Thanks in advance.

Do you know how long ago it happened? Kinda looks recent, and the peck marks on his comb suggest recent picking by someone. The bottom of his wattles also, and it could be mild frostbite there also. I would say it's doubtful that he will recover his eyesight on that side, looks to be too damaged. You can usually get terramycin eye ointment at tractor supply stores, I'd try to get that if you can. Apply a couple of times a day. He will always be at a disadvantage among other roo's due to not being able to see on that side, and same with predators. Otherwise he can adapt and do fine. Make sure he knows were food and water are and is feeding and drinking normally. Might want to monitor is weight for a while.

Thanks for the reply!
I believe the seller said last week, but I’m not sure. He did say he got picked on.
Alright. I didn’t think so, but I thought I’d ask. I’ll try to get the terramycin. I was just at TSC this morning lol.
The other roosters and pretators shouldn’t be a problem, as I hope to use him for breeding. He’s separated from other roosters. We’ll have to see if he gets around well enough to get the job done.

The Bielefelder’s been doing good. His name is now Cyclops lol. There’s no discharge from his eye, and he keeps it open most of the time.
He has no problem getting around, or eating/drinking. I’ve been getting an 80% fertility rate, so he seems to be mounting ok.
