Injured feral cat, what to do with him.

Im in the same boat here. There is a long haired male cat that got injured a few months ago. I saw him sitting at the edge of the blackberries with deep cuts and blood all over. Looked like a larger animal chewed on him. Before you could not get close to him. Now he shows up at my door trying to get in. Even let my dogs walk right by him. He has scars all over his head and face. Looks like he might have an infection on one wound under his chin. I have left over meds from my cat when he had an infection. I feed him some. Thats all I can do for him. The shelter here dont want to take in the strays that never gets adopted. Because they cant even rehome the tame ones.

I think im going to talk to dh about adopting one or two more tonight. the only thing is I have to be able to get my hands on them and for me to be able to catch them easily. it would just really hurt if Id have another feral get hurt so badly and I wouldnt know it until it was too late. my tiny barn cat was a house cat and when we no longer have tiny babies in the house shes going to become a house cat again. (she has been temporarly removed because she decided she is a better mother for my newborns then I am

Sorry it turned out that way, but it really sounds like you did the best thing and you did give him a *chance*.

I second (or third or whatever) the motion to adopt one or two semi-ferals as barn cats. If you want a tom (type) to try to keep the "random cat" population down you can sometimes get one that is vasectomized rather than actually neutered, although be aware this does not decrease its propensity to get into fights the way neutering sort of does.

And, if you do adopt one and something like this happens, it IS a bit different taking in a cat and saying "here, this is my fave barn cat, can you help him" versus "this is some random wild cat that wandered by", even if the two cats are equally uncooperative about being handled. So even if the cat you adopt is not a "pet cat" it is still not quite the same situation as this.

You certainly did the best you could. Good on ya for taking him where he could get care, or at least a way out of pain. I didn't notice where you live, but I'm sure if you do a search under "feral cat rescue" or some such thing, you'll be able to find what you're looking for. These cats have been tested for feline leukemia and vaccinated for all the things you don't want. Sometimes even wormed, but always spayed/neutered. Good luck with your search, and know you did all that could be done
