I’m not seeking advice on how to treat, but wondering if anyone has experienced this and the outcome :)

Long story short, a 12-week old hen had circulation cutoff her leg and her foot looks so bad. I did the online vet and I’ve been following their advice and I’m going to an in-person vet tomorrow. What is the likelihood this will heal? Should I expect bad news when I take her tomorrow?

Was there a leg band that got tight or was not noticed? Can se move the toes? A lot depends on if the circulation was completely cut off and for how long. Cracking and ulceration of the skin may be expected. Sometimes doing a daily warm 15 soak to the feet in Epsom salts, Betadine, Hibiclens or a little Dawn can be helpful in healing. The cracks and open skin should be coated in plain triple antibiotic ointment. Usually when circulation if completely cut off as in frostbite or a constrictive object, the foot will shrivel and turn black and leathery, and then self-amputate in about 6 weeks. But do try hard to save the foot, and I hope all goes well.

Yes, it was a band that I have NO IDEA how she got it constricted, for about 12 hours, maybe less. I have been soaking with betadine and using the antibiotic ointment. I can’t really tell if she can move the toes, and she is trying her best to not put any weight on that foot.

I only had the band on because I had a few that all looked the same and someone was coming to get a couple. Learned my lesson, never again.

Leg band injuries are common, especially if they are put on when they are small and not noticed. Hairs or strings can also cause this in baby chicks. I am hopeful that the soaking will help to heal the foot. I think there could be a good chance that you can save the foot. You will probably know how bad it is in a week or so. Let us know how she gets along.

She’s gonna be fine! Got some antibiotics and should be 100% in about 2 weeks. I’m so relieved!
