You or the neighbours confident with a gun? That's a good way to do it if nobody can stomach the hands on stuff. That's how I had sickly birds killed for the first couple years.

Good animal husbandry includes culling, euthanizing, etc. There are MANY ways to put down your chicken.... please look them up. Perhaps you couldn't do CD, but you might be able to use another method. Please research so you will be prepared.

Yes, yes, yes!! I rather wish there was something on this topic made mandatory reading for every single new flock keeper. Your beloved babies will grow old and ill and sometimes get horribly injured, and it's cruelty to have them die slowly because you are too wussy.

Gah, so sorry this happened.

Were you surprised when her head came off? Were you sitting there in shocked disbelief. That's quite the dislocation.

I took a strength test at a science fair when I was in high school. It said I had enough strength to strangle a chicken. By the looks of things, that's not saying much.

Sometimes you don't have the luxury of waiting for someone else to do it. With my recent incident, my husband wasn't due home for another hour or so. I didn't want to make my dying bird suffer an extra hour.

This exactly. I wasn't in a right mindset to cull her, yet I KNEW it was my duty to her, as she was MY responsibility. She was wounded, in terrible pain, and I wan't gonna wait around for the DH to come home, get into HIS culling mindset, and euthanize her.

This WAS difficult for me..... but it was the best thing FOR HER. That's all

A friend recently had to cull a pet chicken. Because of her hesitations, she had to wring it's neck 4 times!!! I didn't want my chicken to go through that, so I made sure her neck was dislocated. I truly did NOT mean to take her head clean off, but it's not that difficult to do as a matter of fact.

I think an article should be made about the importance of euthanasia, the different methods, and a brief paragraph about how, if you honestly don't have a *final solution*, perhaps not keeping chickens would be in the best interest of you and future chickens.

Pretty sure they tried wringing the chickens neck... and was timid about it.
