Injured Hen, Culled (WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOS)

So sorry you had to go through this - I steeled myself to look at the photos because I wanted to see how you handled it.

I just had to do this with my hen that was attacked by a hawk. I have no idea how she was still alive after getting gutted, I just wanted to end her suffering as quickly as possible. I couldn't dislocate her spine under the head (I gave it a try, but didn't want to spend more time going in, looking it up on the computer, trying again) and we don't currently have an axe, so I used the strongest garden shears I had and took off her head.

I didn't bury her because I remembered in the back of my head someone saying that they once buried a favorite chicken and something like a bear ended up digging it up, and then going after their live chickens. Or my dogs would end up digging her up. Either way, no thanks.

You can see the horse trailer in the background, and the tiny space under the door (I've borded up quite a bit of it now, but couldn't do it all or we wouldn't be able to get in it.) Grrr.

Oh yeah... Their little red car, in case they need to take a trip into town...
