Injured Hen-Dog attacked her.

Your doing good. Sounds like your doing everything i suggested and she should be alright. Just make she she has fresh water at all times, and is in a quiet place. From my experience she'll be fine and back to normal within a few weeks.

Ill keep updated on this post...

DH just checked her out, he's pretty sure her leg is broken (thigh) and she does have a cut on her thigh also. It's not bleeding but he said it is a "tear" about 3" long. Okay, should we let her go over night or not? She hasn't had any food or water since the accident 6.5 hours ago. TIA
Update on the skin tear-the skin did tear but not the meat, so I guess that makes it less severe. DH put some iodine on it and I'm going to scramble some eggs for her and give her some strawberries. I'll post an update later.

Hi everyone!

My dog attacked my hen a few days ago. I found her cold and soaking wet, in shock. (It was cold and raining/sleeting out.) I wrapped her in a towel and brought her in the house. My daughter actually did her homework with the hen wrapped up on her lap. We fed her yogurt mixed with some grower crumbles and water to drink. We put her in a rubbermaid container, with a piece of wire shelving over it, covered with a towel. She started to perk up slowly over the next couple of days, and even layed an egg.
Then I realized she was only using one wing. She still seems rather weak. I am unable to feel any broken bones, but she has a large blue lump (hematoma) under the wing ("armpit" area). I read on another site to wrap the wing up to her body with some "vet wrap" I wrapped her wing to her side this afternoon. She still isn't eating much. It has warmed up outside, so I put her back out so she could get some sun. I'm not sure what to do next. (She is safe from the dog now, because she can't fly out of the fenced in area with a bum wing)

The idea of feeding her egg sounds like a good one, I think I'll boil some up.

Oh and by the way, I'm new here. I just decided to add on to this thread, because of the similar subject. I hope that's okay.

Okay, so its good to check on her through out the night. Try to sit with her and prompt her to eat. Try different things, maybe a favorite food of hers. Is she drinking? Not eating, right?
Make sure shes not too hot or too cold. And keep her straw fresh. Just a tip, chickens find hay more comfy than they do straw.

Keep me posted!!

Hi Sandbellie

She ate some strawberry and I put a bowl of scrambled eggs right by her water. My thinking is that if she can make it 24 hours with no sign of infection or any more shock, she might pull through. I think DH is basing her fate on that skin tear. Ah well, such is life on the "farm".

She's eating and drinking but it's hard to tell what her injuries are, it looks like her belly (whatever you would call that area) is really red and around her vent may be where she's injured. We had to pour warm water over her to get all of the poo off. No yucky smells so I don't think there's any infection. She flapped her wings at us when we held her on her back. All looks good at this point except she can't bear any weight on that leg. We're hoping she heals up!

Well, we got her all cleaned up and then DH realized that her vent was torn up. Just a mess. She'd never be able to lay an egg. He's out "ending things" right now. Poor girl. Well, that's only or 2nd loss out of 12 so I feel like that's pretty good odds. Thanks to you all for all of your help. This has been a great learning experience.
