Injured Hen

Well my Sadie is doing much better the left eye swelling is going down and she opened it up just a crack two days ago. She is drinking water from a shallow dish but only if I tap it for sound. She still can't fully see yet.

My next question is why is Sadie drooling when she drinks water? I have been feeding her crumble soften with sugar water or plain water in a soupy texture so she can drink it. Can anyone help? Thanks

I'm so glad that Sadie is doing alright and that you have her inside. Could the drooling be from the swelling she had around the left side of her beak? She did get some squashing of her head a little, so hopefully she will recover from that. It is frustrating that they don't make red light bulbs in lower wattage any more. It's either the 250 watt heat bulbs, or go down to the 25 watt incandescent bulbs, or use a white or yellow one. I bought some 60 watt red bulbs a few years ago, but I think they are no longer available. It's surprising that companies haven't offered a red heat lamp bulb at 100 watts anymore. The red bulbs seem to let the chickens sleep better, and keep the crowing down. I don't use heat lamps unless it gets below zero her in my coop. Can you offer Sadie some raw egg and buttermilk mixed in her crumbles? They usually like that, and you can thin it down with water. You are so good to try and help her.

Hi again

I need some advise. Sadie hasbeen drinking water on her own but still no signs of wanting to eat much. She is showing signs of crusty eye, droopy appearence, slobbering and nasal congestion. I called tractor supply and the guy said to give her vet rx. So I went and bought some and put 1 drop in each nostril 1 drop on her head and 1 drop under both wings. Could it be just from her getting waterin het nose from misjudging the water dish because she can't see still? Or stress from her injuries? And do I need antibotics?

Since her face was injured, the eye drainage and nasal congestion could be from the facial swelling, but If you think it could be a respiratory infection, or that she aspirated fluid, then by all means use an antibiotic. Tylan 50 injectable given by mouth 0.2 ml per pound of weight for 5 days could help. You will need a needle (22 gauge) and a syringe to get the medicine out of the vial, unless you twist off the top with pliers. I would probably get 5 syringes and needles to keep it sterile, so that you could use it (injectable or orally) later if there is another sickness. Always place it in the refrigerator after opening.
