Hi there. I have 4 RIR chickens that are over a year old and I also have 4 Golden Comet chickens about 4 months old. They have all been integrated into the coop and are doing well together. The RIR's seem to try and be dominant and will chase the Comets a little but haven't attacked them aggressively. They do sort of huddle together in their own little group. Anyway, a little while ago I heard some loud noises in the barn yard and looked over and one of the RIRs was standing over one of the Comets, who was laying down. I ran in to see what was going on and the Comet had something wrapped around and stuck on his foot. I was able to get it untangled and while I was petting her and calming her down I noticed that she had been pecked in the head. It wasn't bleeding but I could see the mark when I moved her feathers to the side. The second I put her down one of the RIR's attacked her. I scooped her back up and now I have her in a wire dog kennel in the coop area.
She doesn't seem to be injured from the string tied around her foot, although she was holding it up a little - but seems to be moving around fine. What should I expect here? This is my first time integrating younger and smaller chickens together and it is the first time I have had one injured. How long do I have to keep her quarantined? I don't want them to attack her.
Thank you!!
