Hi all, I've been raising quails for a few months and got home today to find one of my quails lethargic and non responsive, it looks like he had a small injury on his head that may have become infected. I have 4 quails 8weeks old(2 male and 2 female) and 14 that are 2 weeks old and they are housed separately. We do have 6 neighbouring cats who take great interest in my quails me have eaten 2 that escaped last week (I've secured them better now) I suspect that either a cat has scratched this one through the wire or the other male may have attacked this one but they don't seem to be aggressive towards each other.

Any advice on nursing this till guy back to health? I've put him in a box on his own in the house for now with some water and food.

If it's a female, check if she is egg bound, our had it often. If her injury is infected you want to fix that as quick as possible, some infections can get in the blood stream. Then it's a whole new story.

Keep him warm and see if there is any improvement within 12 hours or so. If not, I'd help him drink something, perhaps using a syringe. I might actually do that already, as dehydration is definitely not going to help him. If he hasn't got better within a day, I'd dissolve some feed in water and use a syringe or whatever works for you to feed him that. And then feed and water him every few hours and hope for the best. The damage might be so extensive he will never regain control over his body though, so be aware you might end up having to cull him - if he doesn't die on his own.

It's a male he used to be quite rowdy, he had a rather aggressive brother he would copy but since a cat ate him a few weeks ago this ones been a bit more chilled out, my 2 hens have started Laying 2 days ago it's been quite relaxed in the run.

The wound to his head that I assume is the source of the problem seems to have scabbed over so must have happened a few days ago and I didn't notice, he's only been like this today, I'm not sure if I should mess with it now as there is no blood or anything, I've put him in the brooder box I use with food and water and will keep it dark and warm for him.

His it flown up when scared maybe and boinked it's head really common in quail. That is if you have a roof. Poor Lil guy best of luck

Sadly Didn't make it through the night Will possibly never know what did the damage
