One of my newest girls, five months old, has an injury. Her foot looks infected. She is limping and not putting weight on it.

I’ve never encountered anything like this, and I’m not sure what to do.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Is the toe broken, or is it just a wound? I would flush it out well, if there is dead tissue you will need to debride that and get it all removed. You can use sterile saline or diluted chlorhexidine (Hibiclens). You can also soak it daily in epsom salts. See if there is any bad smell from the wound. Then apply a triple antibiotic ointment in and over the wound, wrap with gauze loosely and then vet wrap or co wrap to keep it clean. I would check it daily and reapply ointment after cleaning it as needed and then rebandage, until you know it's healing. If there is bad smell, indicating infection, then you might try packing the wound with sugardine (plain white sugar mixed with a bit of betadine to make a paste) and wrapping. An oral antibiotic might be needed in that case as well. Amoxicillin is good, you can get it online as fish mox or aqua mox, without prescription. Dosing is 57 mg per pound of weight twice a day for 5 to 7 days. If you can get closer up, clearer pictures of the wound while you are working on it, that would be good.

Thank you so much. I will begin doing this tomorrow as it’s 9:50 PM now. and I will try getting a clearer picture.
