Hi. I brought some eggs in that my hen abandoned. I don't have an incubator but they're in a small bathroom with a heat lamp and a space heater and wet paper towels and I go in and mist the air every so often. One hatched fine a couple days ago. This one pipped yesterday but didn't get through even the outer membrane, just cracked a piece of the shell. A half day later the outer membrane was looking pretty thick and white. At the time most of what I had read said thick and white means drying out. I've since read that it's actually not a big deal, but anyway, I had opened it for him and exposed his beak. Then about 8 more hours went by. Since he's not in an actual incubator I was really worried about shrink wrapping so I went ahead and chipped away some shell and tore some white membrane. I didn't tear any inner membrane. Where his beak was it was already torn. So my questions are, there's inner membrane across his face holding his head in place. There is also what looks to be a big blood vessel across his face. I'm posting two pictures, one just of how he looks and then one I've marked with colors so you can tell me if I know what's what. The blue dot area is the outer membrane that I had just wet, prior to wetting it it was white. The green dot area is inner membrane. I wet the bottom part but not the top part because it's so close to his nostril. How does this sound so far? Then the arrow is going to what looks like a huge blood vessel going right across his face. Do you guys agree that's what that is? I can tell he's obviously not ready to come out because of seeing blood veins at the lower part. This is one of those eggs that doesn't have a pointy end, so I don't know if he pipped in the wrong place and that's why there is a big blood vessel there. He's wrapped in a damp paper towel and is back under his heat lamp.
Thanks!
