I recently got back into chickens. I have missed having them and I recently purchased some baby chicks through TSC and a hatchery. My question is I found some chickens that are already laying and I was debating on selling the chicks and just purchase the older birds. I am not wanting two or three different coops are a lot of birds just 10-15 at most. What would you do?

My thoughts were to keep the chicks and not risk introducing illnesses from older birds. Not to mention loss of productivity from the older birds (how old are we talking, here?)

They are 2 years old. I would just like to have some chickens laying eggs already.

The chicks will typically start laying at around 20-24 weeks. It seems like a long time, but it’s worth the wait, imo. Meantime you could get some mature hens. Just be aware that the first year is usually their most productive. After two years, egg production may stop or slow considerably.

I just need more patience. Thanks
