Quail on the way! I’d like to buy our live bugs in bulk since we’re having them shipped. I am considering Dubai roaches, butter worms, and meal worms.

My quail also LOVE mealworms and a friend of mine says her quail love dubia. I raise dubia for my beardie, they are a little more complicated, expensive, and take longer to get established than mealworms but if there are other reptile keepers in the area, you might profit in selling extra dubia since they go for a pretty good price. Also, consider that dubia get too large when they reach adult size to feed to a gecko or quail so you will have to figure what to do with excess adults regardless. If you have chickens, they will easily take care of the big dubia and they will love you for it.

Dubia are excellent quail treats, and a little healthier than mealworms too. They are expensive to buy regularly and slow to breed, but worth it in the end. My roach culture has hundreds and provides enough to keep them in treats year round.

Question on that, they are roaches, arent they mostly exoskeleton with guts ? Is it bad to give them too much ? I have no idea so asking lol

Dubia have tough shells but only when they get to subadult/adult. The bite-sized ones are quite soft and easy to digest. At all stages a well-fed dubia is filled with meat and stomach contents, they have a huge gut for digesting plant matter which makes them great for gutloading for feeding to reptiles but it also works for quail, a good way to get extra vitamins.

Oh ty for the info since me and misses was thinking of breeding these in future for reptiles so this works out for both 😆

I just realized I didn’t ask my question 😅.
I wanted to know if there were other insects I should consider like red worms, night crawlers, crickets, etc? I want to make sure our quail have plenty of protein. Does any have advice on when to introduce insects to the diet?

Thanks, for the information so far. It’s been really helpful.
