Hi all!

This is a recent problem, that I only first noticed today. There are very small insects in my chicken coop. I inspected all my girls and they are not on them . . . just in the pine shaving bedding. They don't look like ticks - almost more like tiny gnats. They tend to be right next to their poop before I cleaned it out? Egg production is normal and they seem to be happy. None of them have any bites or sores. Any ideas on what they might be or what I can do to help. I like to ensure that my girls always have a clean coop, any nothing like this has ever happened before.

Thanks!

Are the pine shavings damp? If so, it's normal to have tiny insects attracted to the moisture. If you would like not to have them, you can sprinkle permethrin chicken and garden dusting powder over the bedding. It's safe for the chickens and it will kill the bugs.

Have you got a photo? If it's been a bit wet and then warm they could be midges or gnats. I get them sometimes. When I clean them out I mix permethrin powder in the shavings. I've had a red mite problem! It seems to work for the best part. And smells s bit nicer!
