Insects on Chicks: Mites/Lice?

Yes just pick her up carefully and her chicks will run around a bit....

A shed might be hotter than in the shade- I don't know. My sheds are much hotter inside in summer than the outdoors.

They won't like mist sprayed on them (ask me how I know

) LOL I thought they would love it but noooooo!

I have put ice cubes in waterers before.

But the chicks require the chick waterers, so they don't drown - or you can put rocks in the drinking trough part so they don't drown- but it must be a very shallow waterer, even so.

I am sure no expert but you might research using Ivermectin on Mamma hen but not the babies. I am NOT a big fan of dusting birds espically Sevin Dust since birds have such a delicate respitory system. This is going to be a long on going problem since they are probably picking them up from the grass outside. You are going to have to be diligent and break what~ever~it is life cycle. I am sure there are some 'natural' remedys also which would be less toxic. You may find some of them on line. DAWN dish soap (or a lemon based soap) will kill most everything and is safer than strong cemicals but I don't know if it is safe to wash the babies in it form the aspect of them getting chilled. You could keep them 'in' or dry them with a hair drier. Chickens are pretty adaptable to temp.'s as long as there is no draft in cold weather BUT air movement and shade in hot weather. Watch them, their behavior will tell you if they are too hot or cold. Either way, always keep fresh, clean water available. (??? There may be something you can feed them that would deter and kill the critter crawling on them too.) Best wishes, good luck and WELCOME from 'down under'.

You are going to need to separate the mama for a day and do them one at a time if you
do it right now the reality is it is your call in the end but first you are going to need to
acquire the dust from a feed store of vet or even order it on line

next thing you'll
need to do is follow the directions on the container ........ you're time line and ability to
get the dust will dictate when the dusting will be dune ..... and any thoughts on how you
are going to inspect the surrounding area for the cause of the critters ......
A little research on your part as my grandpa use to say ,,,, a person can never have
enough books on chickens health and care ......
