(insert swear words here) Kidney stones!!! UPDATE # 42

Well maybe that's your body's wisdom? Things that will make you sick are generally repulsive to your tastebuds.

My doc drinks water with lemon slices all day long, if he remembers to. When he's too busy, then WOOPS there's another #!*@! stone.........

Luckily, we work in a hospital with two (YEP, TWO!) urologists who like to place stents. I am jealous, I didn't work there when I had my last stone, now I see how easy people have it when they come to this hospital. They come in with pain, they get stented, they go home the same day, pain free. Its sick. Its just sick how the rest of us suffer.

Yep tis true, I fear. So I am wary of canned foods containing "calcium chloride", and I reduce my calcium intake, not the other way around. Those Orange Juices with Calcium Added are driving me nuts! There are some foods on my "no-no" list, including beets, greens and spinach, and almonds (but I think all nuts) I should only eat reduced. And meat, because of its effect on calcium, should be reduced, too. Anything to avoid another stuck stone.

I'm beginning to believe vegetarianism is smart.

My 14 yo is mostly a vegetarian because he just doesn't like meat, but will eat bacon and recently tried ham from our neighbor's pig that he LOVED but he'll eat almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and, of course, our eggs.

Perhaps you can consult a nutritionist. Take a list of all of your symptoms, your problems, what you found about the foods you eat and what they do to you, what foods you detest, and your goals. Hopefully the nutritionist can help you come up with a plan to get you healthy(er).

Good luck!

I went home with a stent post litho, stent came out and gravel blocked everything up. Ended up in the er with 2 iv's wide open till it opened. Lots of morphine and puking involved. Did any of you ever get the lit on the lighotripsy? "Gentle shock waves break up the stone--blah blah blah" Whoever wrote that never had it done.

From the looks of it, they don't even aim at the stone. I was bruised over my entire back and side. I think they're just pushing the "go" button in general, and generally at the body on the table. Hopefully the stone happens to be somewhere in there and might break apart from all the shockwaves.

Just got a new patient, she is coming in for fertility issues but once these procedures are done she wants to work on the stones. I know it will be after the 24th but I'll let you know how it turns out! Seems these things are going around!

Calicum supplements AND vitamin D will increase your risk of kidney stones... that's probably what did it. Put that same amount of calcium in food you eat where there are various carrieries and other minerals and you'll be better off.

I think calcium and vit D are pushed hard b/c of osteoporosis, but if you just did load bearing exercises like lifting weights daily, you will naturally retain what calcium you do eat and be able to acutally use the large dose of calcium you take otherwise. Don't use the bones and they will break down faster.
