Inside coop color

Good idea Opa! Wow I can't wait! I didn't realize that I would be so excited about the coop.

Just be careful. That excitement can lead to wanting to build more coops. I now have 4 and will soon be putting an addition on the larger one. If you don't think it can happen, check out my signature line.

Would that I could Opa. We are deep in the heart of suburbia. Most of my neighbors don't even know they are going to have chickens for neighbors yet.

So one coop for me, although I plan to stock it well.

My old coop was an ugly maroon color, so this time I'm hoping to paint it a happy color, like pale pale yellow! I might just paint the outside though.

Outside pale blue, leftover house paint.
Inside, plain old white primer. Again, leftover.

No chicken is ever spoiled at here TizNotta Farm.

Once we finish

Our coop will be White w/Ivy Green X's. Our other out building will be reversed. We haven't done anything on the inside yet? I really like the natural look, but it sounds like we ought to paint. We are lining the nesting boxes and other roosting areas with press down tile squares. The floor is combo dirt and cement slab. The roof is coragated gray UV. We have drop down windows that are screened for ventilation. Although I am wondering about the roof and winter???

We started building in March and here we are in May and still making design changes. Our 7 chicks now live in the master bedroom bath...

Winter, in Azusa?? I can assure you there is little to be concerend about.
I grew up in Ventura County - stop worrying. Do get the roof solidliy attached, however. The Santa Ana Winds will come before you know it.....

As for painting the coop, that is more for you than the chickens. Really, the chickens wont appreciate it any more if you do.

In fact, if you want to make them happy, ditch the paint and line the interior with styrofoam insulation board. They still won't appreciate you for it, but they will thouroughly enjoy tearing it to shreds.

(Thats a joke by the way... dont put styrofoam ANYTHING where a chicken can get at it. Ever.)

-------------------------------------

Painting has two really tangible benefits:
1. Light colors on the exterior do help reflect the suns rays, and thus help keep the heat down on the inside. This is especially useful in places where insulation is not used, nor really needed. Azusa is one of the latter.
2. When applied to the inside of the coop, light finishes make it easier to spot pests, dirt and filth. This, in turn, may tempt one to actually clean the coop now and then. So that's a good thing.

Outside of that, it's all you. GO as wild or as artistic as you wish, since you will be looking at it daily. As for the chickens, well, they're the worst sort of critics, in my experience.

They say nothing about your hard work and only love you for keeping up the buffet.

Mine is getting painted this week. I bought sunny yellow for the walls, hot pink for the nestboxes and perches, and I'm putting little purple chickens on the walls.

The outside is painted to match the house and looks nice and unobtrusive, but the inside is going to be a riot. The guy at the paint store asked me if my chickens would lay in such a bright silly room.
