inside coop: dark or light?

My coop has very large windows on each side, but I have to close them once it starts getting cold and windy. Now, I close it with shutters, so then it gets dark in the coop. So my husband was nice enough to hook up electricity for me and now I turn the light on in the morning when I go to work, and I turn it off around 9pm.

If it's dark in there, they just roost and sleep, and I figure they need to be able to scratch around in there, eat and drink......just do chicken stuff.

I think lights seem to help more than paint.
