Last week we bought my 9 year old daughter 4 Millie Fleur (spelling??) chicks that were 12 days old. They looked very healthly. We kept them in a large cage with a light on them at night. One of them seemed to not be growing as fast as the others. ( my daughters favorite) Anyway this morning when we checked on them the little one was dead and all of her insides were outside, what could have happened to her?? The other chicks were not picking at her or anything, she had plenty of food and water. Should we be worried about the other 3?

Most likely it had a genetic defect. Hopefully, your others do not have the same one. This is not something that is very common, from what I have read. Sorry this happened to you.

Sorry I don't have pictures. I took the chick back to the chicken lady , (we call her) She said she thought the other chicks might have pecked her and pecked her insides out.

I don't think so!! I think something was wrong with her and she didn't want to replace it. I don't think we will buy from her again. I bought 8 cochin pullets last year and ended up with 8 cochin roos. And I didn't think she was very nice about it to my daughter who was heart broken!!

I wonder what would cause a chick to just spontaneously explode in a gentle sort of way? Did it have a see-through abdominal area before this happened?

No it seemed fine . But it didn't really seem to grow like the others. What would that mean if it was see through?

I'm not sure. I read a post the other day where a hen had this see-through area on her breast, and you could see her intestines. After a few days of debate, the lady who owned the hen said that she saw the hen get accidentally pricked by another hen's claw while they were all rolling around taking dust baths. The hen's skin there split and her intestines spilled out immediately. It sounds so similar to yours, just different ages.

Sorry about your chick. I think I know who you are purchased them from. I purchased two frizzles from her, very pricey, and both males also. Anyway, if you would like I will have chicks hatching in about 2 weeks, If interested PM me. I live near you. Sandy
