So my hubby talked about how he had RIR before we met. The more we talked the more I wanted to get into raising chickens. One weekend we decided to take the plunge and got 5 BB Red Bantums from a neighbor. 3 teens and 2 babies. Over a week and a half I realized how quickly our new babies were getting spoiled. To put a little meat on their bones I was making a warm wet mash for them in the evenings. They still look at me with that look saying "where's my wet mash!" After that I looked into what I would prefer in a flock that our children could help tend to. Our Bantums were awesome, but flighty and nervous around the kiddos. I found myself attracted to heritage birds as they seemed to have the most docile of personalities, as well as being a good dual purpose bird. And that led to us going from 5 to 13 chickens. We now have a trio of Amerecaunas, a trio of Buff Orpingtons, and a pair of Chocolate Orpingtons to accompany our Bantums. Our Bantums and Amer Roos are coop neighbors and like to have a crowing competition throughout the day. Buttercup, my sweetest buff hen like to coo/purr to me whenever I visit them. Fancy, our chocolate hen likes to prance around daintily. Kingpen likes to huff up in the mirror and then strut his stuff. Daisy (aka Mammas) is my lazy little girl who likes to be pampered (she was injured and actually lost a toe when we first got her so she got used to being wrapped in a warm towel and being cuddled). And Zeus and Miss Ladii are definite partners in crime!
