Insulate or not to?

All coops should be well insulated to protect from high heat in the summer and freezing weather in winter. There should also be lots of top ventilation and a couple of windows/doors covered with hardware cloth that can be opened in the summer for cross ventilation.

I can understand insulating where it snows and the winters are cold.....what about in California where the coldest temp you see is the high 20's at night?

We northerners can't relate to that kind of luxurious weather, BiggKountry!

I would think you'd be more concerned about excess heat and keeping the air flowing...

Preface: I grew up outside Philly, and lived near New Brunswick NJ for a few yrs, so have some idea of the climate.

For typical chicken breeds, you don't need to insulate. It is not *that* kind of "cold" climate

.

You may *choose* to insulate. There are really no disadvantages, assuming you do it properly and manage the coop properly, except that obviously it's one more thing to buy'scrounge and install.

Personally I would go with the insulation

Good luck, have fun,
