Insurance, Doctors..etc (per Troll.. ha ha!)

That $300 a month med that you take is only being reimbursed to the pharmacy at less than $100. (most likely $70)

The problem is when comparing how much a medical cost is you can't go by the inflated self pay rate but go by its real market value. The real market value is what the insurance and copay pays.

What other industry do you know where the insurance company pays less for a service than you would paying yourself? If you wreck your car and take it to a body shop, if the estimate is $500 then the cost is $500 no matter who's pocket the money comes from.

On the other hand with heath care if the estimate is $500 it would be $500 to you but only $150 to the insurance company.

I had bowel resection surgery, I had a 20/80 insurance plan. They paid 80%, I paid 20%. The surgery was $20,000 so my portion was $4,000.

I got a letter from the hospital stating that the insurance company had decided that mine was a pre existing condition so the hospital had refunded the insurance company's portion bill. The insurance company's 80% was ONLY $5,000.

The true market price of that operation was $9,000. That is an $11,000 discount for the insurance company. Sorry 10% is a volume discount or even 20% but a 70% discount is a scam.

When I contacted the hospital to negotiate payment, they charged me the full $20,000 for a $9,000 operation. I told them I would only pay the market rate of $9,000 and was told they could not do that due to the contract they have with insurance companies.

Needless to say they were paid nothing. They lost everything on that operation because it was better business to write off the inflated $20,000 than get paid a fair rate.

I get Remecaid every 8 weeks for my Crohns. It costs about $10,000 every time I get it. That's $10,000 for ten little tiny vials of medicine. I pay my $1500 deductible in January and then insurance picks up everything from there. Thank heavens or I wouldn't be doing the Remecaid and would likely be on disability due to an inability to work. As it is I live a very full, very busy, normal life.

I understand the phmaceutical companies' need to fund research, but it seems costs of drugs keep going up and up and up. I too would like to see an end to drug rep "bonuses" and pharmaceutical advertising. Put the marketing money towards research and charge less for the drugs!

I agree Troll, 100% with you. When I say Pharmacy - I mean the pharmacutical companies - not the "little pharmacy down the road" (i.e, WalMart, CVS, etc). I'm talking Big Pharmacuticals, not the go-between distributors.

The issue with the cost of meds are patents. You shouldnt be able to hold a lock on a medication for 30 years, it drives the cost way up. At the same time, a cancer drug shouldnt cost $1,000.00 per pill either - thats ridiculous!! My father died of cancer - talk about a huge bill! I'm still PO'd about it all! Incredible the cost of chemo, radiation, oral meds, etc. Insane. I understand that research needs to be paid for etc - however....does it take 30 years of increasing the cost to pay for it all? Does it take 10, 5 - who decides? Certainly not us - the consumer.

Very very good points indeed - as I said, I'm standing right beside you on this issue, I am. I get it as do millions of other Americans. Its disgusting when I go into the ER and they charge me $12.50 for a freaking Tylenol for my son who's running 103.5 fever and then charge me an additional $8.50 for a Benedryl dose - EACH TIME HE HAD IT. $$25.00 for 2 doses of Tylenol?!! I wont even tell you what my ER bill was....those nice little latex gloves that you can purchase an entire box for less than $7.00 in the store for 100 count - I was charged $19.00 for the one set the dr. used to examine my son! I wouldnt have had him there had it not been an emergency to begin with - he was having fever seizures and I couldnt bring it down even alternating Tylenon and Motrin, so off we went.

Now...who makes those prices on those items and why dont we as Americans have any say in it whatsoever?

Some people say its the insurance companies that drive those costs up, others say its the uninsured that drive it up, yet others say its the doctors....

The reason for the high cost of everything, is all the folks getting KICK BACKS and big fat paychecks.
Doctors etc...

Look at the fact medical insurance companies pay all their employee's everyone getting the big $$$ there.

When the doctor gives you or your kids a shot or prescribe a certain med, they get a kick back from the pharm companies, who get the money from the government or your insurance - its so sneaky and underhanded its stupid.

The insurance companies and pharm companies are the ones responsible for the high cost of medical care.

Bring back the good old days, when doctors got cash up front from the patient, no stupid long paperwork to fill out - nobody else involved in what to pay and when to pay it etc....

I don't have insurance, and at the way things stand it doesn't help me. EVERYONE should step back and say we're NOT paying insurance - and go back to paying the doc cash up front.

Yeah - like Doc on Little House on the Prairie!

Oh this is such a hot topic with me!!! I take Keppra for seizures. No generic available. Our co-pay is $75 a month! WTH?! Can't take anything else because I've already taken a bunch of others. Either I'm HIGHLY allergic or I can't tollerate the side effects. Anyone taken Topamax (the stupid drug)? I have the same problem with antibiotics. Allergic to all basic antibiotics. I can take Levaquin and wouldn't you guess, no generic. I had brain surgery back in May of 2005. Still trying to pay that off:( Had to go to the ER back in September. MY part is $1700. Never mind that I've already reached my deductible. Hate the stupid 80/20. DH and I are seriously debating filing bankruptcy because of all of these stupid medical bills. And OMG help me if you try to be responsible and pay your bill, but just can't pay what they want. Most places treat you better payment wise if you DIDN'T have insurance. Oh, this last ER trip netted 5 separate bills. Everybody wants at least $25/ mo. Sorry, my kids need to eat more than you need that bill paid. Ugh!!!!!!!!

And dont you just LOVEEEEE the "fill out a financial report and we'll let you know how much to pay a month towards your bill" ?! WTH?!! Uhm - NO .. I will NOT fill out YOUR financial mumbo-jumbo, I'm telling you what I can pay and if you dont want to accept that, put it in writing that you are refusing my payment and I"ll see you in court, thank you very much!

Been there, done it and WON in front of the judge - and he dimissed what we owed (many many years ago) so now, thats exactly what I tell medical bill people - and you know what? they have YET to send me that letter stating they refuse to take my payment! I send what I can every month, the same amount, but right now, we're paying out $100.00 a month to 4 drs - its what I can pay, not what they wanted me to pay (some were a min. of $50.00 a month, or take the bill and divide it equally into 4 montly payments, and thats what they wanted me to pay!)

Incredible. I tell them..sure thing, let me go outside and shake my money tree for ya! LOL

I couldn't tolerate it. It turned me into a complete idiot. Not good when being primary caregiver to two small children. I could look at a door, know it's a door, but not for my life be able to tell you it's a door. BAD!

)

You know they dont call it "Dopamax" for nothing!

I went thru that "fog" for the first month or 2 - but it cleared up as my body got used to the drug. I have to take it for migraine control or I'm dead meat....
