insurance to sell duck eggs?

Does anyone that sells duck eggs have insurance?
Do you feel it is necessary?
Any idea what an annual cost is?

I'm looking at selling my excess eggs at a local farmers market. I will be selling around 18 dozen per month. I read an article that recommended liability insurance when selling eggs and now I'm worried that I should have it.

Thoughts?

I've never known anyone have insurance to sell eggs. Depending on state, you're likely to need a permit.

There is business insurance to protect against liability. I asked my insurance agent about it. He said the company will not write insurance policies for any animal product, only vegetables and fruit.

Some farm insurance policies will cover product liability, but the ones I contacted would not talk to me unless I gave them all of my business - farm, home, auto, etc.

@ChickenCanoe I am lucky in that NC does not have any laws that apply to duck eggs. I spoke with the Egg Law person at the NC Dept of Agriculture. (We have so many egg producers in the state that there is one person that is dedicated to egg law questions!!!)

Quite a number of them are simply shared, as one of my personal aims is to set an example of a gift economy, giving others out of our abundance. And it seems to be working.

Now, I am not a mind-reader, but in case this worries anyone, I am not trying to sound sanctimonious. I may decide to sell eggs some day. I am not trying to sound superior. Bless those who sell their eggs. It has just been simpler for me to offer the eggs (I sell other things as you can see from my signature) as gifts so far.

I understand and love the idea. I was giving them away, until I obtained 5 more ducks! Now I will have tons of eggs and lots of feed bills. My goal is to have them pay for their own feed, not necessarily make money on them.
