Hi, my name is Joan and I am new to your website. It looks pretty interesting and I especially like how everyone helps one another.
I have 9 chickens and recently introduced 4 new ones. I did not know my hens were so bossy. They peck at the new ones on passing but no real threat. When will they accept them?
When we get our new coop I will divide the new ones separately. Is that a better idea? The lady that I bought the chickens said they will be fine. Yeah!
Thanks everybody and you have a great day.
Joan

As long as they are roughly the same size and age they will eventually work it out. Actually, if you're moving them all into a new coop that will help a lot - no territory for anyone to defend and be used to.

If you aren't seeing any actual violence and the potential for injury, then just let them work it out. It may take a few weeks or more, but they'll figure it out!

Welcome Joan! I introduced 2 new ones to my flock of 5 back in May. Did it very slowly and did everything right from what I've read. There are STILL random fights. Its hard watching what I thought were my "sweet loving" hens act like a group of mean teenage girls! Good luck with the integration; you have come to the right place for advice!

Hi Joan and welcome to BYC :frow The occasional peck is just a reminder of who's boss. As long as they don't draw blood, they'll work it out.:old

Hi! Make sure they don't draw blood. We didn't catch one of ours in time and when we got home the larger hens had pecked the poor thing to death. It was super sad and gross! We have never had any other issues when we introduce new ones though.... And we do pretty often. :)
