Finally introducing myself. This is my life with chickens so far.

I have always wanted to have chickens but never could talk my DH (dear husband) into it.

One day last spring while at Tractor Supply they had chicks on sale because it was towards the end of Chick Days. And as luck would have it they had coops on sale and I had a coupon! I enlisted the help from the salespeople at TS and they agreed to sell me the coop they had on display. I finally convinced my husband it would be no work for him at all (except moving the already put together coop). He finally gave in. While he headed home to get a trailer I filled a cart with all the necessities I was told I would need. Then for the most importin part of the day was to pick out six chicks. Luckily I had a knowledgeable sales lady and a very nice customer who raised chickens helping me.

We loaded up the coop and headed home. It was still cool out in Northern Michigan so we put the coop in our garage until I could pick out the spot where I would like their home to be. That night I started looking on the internet for information on raising chickens and found this site.

I started reading this site and OH NO I bought too many chickens for my coop. I bought six and it was rated for four. I waited a few days before I told my DH that we would need to add on to the coop. He just laughed at me and said no work for him J He so nicely picked up the chicken wire to add on a small addition and we started to make a plan. Then OH NO number two, chicken wire is not safe from praetors we need hard wire! Well at least we can use the chicken wire around the bottom so nothing can dig in, so no waste and he didn’t have to return it. DH was drawing out what we needed and I really wanted it to match the store bought one so not only did we need lumber now I was matching paint.

Because the wood was all 8’ lengths we might as well make it 8x8 additions, so we wouldn’t have to do a bunch of cutting. I painted every night after work and we built the walls in the garage. Then I ask my DH what he was planning for the top because I read on BYC that predators can get in. He had some roofing tin and we had just enough. So we started putting everything up and I was loving it…until once again on BYC… OH NO bears can get my mama chickens, that’s not happening! So we invested in an electric fence. I am now a happy camper and I did finally get my $1000.00 egg.

My husband has only one commit he said he wouldn’t like to see what I come up with if it meant work for him.

Thanks to everyone on BYC for helping me have a safe place for my mama chickens.

G’Day from down under Psaxton :frow Welcome!

Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable introduction and great work on the coop! I have had to make a pact with hubby in the past “last time I will ask for anything for 6 months” .. longest 6 months of my life and boy did I have a list at the end of it! LOL

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Hello Pasxton welcome to BYC . I enjoyed your introduction .Very well done .You have a nice set up. There are lots of members from your state . Hope your chicken adventure brings you much pleasure and lots of less expensive eggs. Who would of thunk that first omelet would be the most expensive you ever ate :lau
