We've been sheltering in place for 5 weeks as a result of Covid-19 spreading in our area. My spouse thinks it would be a good idea to secure our food source by starting a chicken flock. My kiddos joined 4H this year. My kids were introduced to chickens, and were so elated that my spouse gave the thumbs up on starting our own flock.

I'd like this to be an STEM and entrepreneurial experience for them.

Any suggestions?

Plan and build your coop and run first. Build bigger than you think you need to account for “chicken math”. If you are looking for a school type project, consider incubating your own eggs so the kids can track the development through candling and learn about temperature and humidity, etc.
HAVE FUN!
