I am very glad to join this group. I live in NW Arkansas and have 25 chickens, some mixed, some lavender Orpingtons, as well as blue Marans and a couple GL Wyandottes. I want to start raising all the broilers my family will eat and I want to get a white breed. I have processed homraised chickens many times, but the colored pin feathers take so much time to clean up or else the skin is ugly. I would love to hear from any of you as to the breeds you recommend. Right now, I am considering White Rhode Island or Cornish.
Hi and welcome to BYCWe're so happy that you've decided to join us
I think I prefer the CX from McMurray. 8 weeks start to finish. Heritage Cornish and RIWs chunk out pretty good but take about 24 weeks to get there. An 8 week old bird is much easier to clean.
I don't want to buy the Cornish rock X every time I want to raise fryers, so I plan to raise my own, but I don't think I can produce the same thing. It may not be a healthy bird, as far as being a natural animal. At any rate, I am looking to raise a heritage breed if possible. Don't know where to get heritage Cornish. I am considering Bresse, if I can get them, or White Rhode Islands. I just learned about them recently. I want white because cleaning skin of pinfeather coloring specks after processing is the big time consumer of the dressing process. I have done it many times and want to eliminate much of that step.Cornish rock Xs or heritage cornish?
