Interested in trying quail, several questions

Regarding flying, a coturnix that has never flown farther than a couple feet, can fly far enough to get away from you. They get about 8-10 of lift and can fly 50 yards or more with no conditioning as some of my neighbors have discovered.

How high should a roof be then, if they can get such a high lift? Is 4-5' tall enough for a run?

Again, this is great feedback, thank you very much everyone. I like the raised bed ideas too! Blueprints are starting to take shape in my head :)

No, you need to keep the ceiling 6 or more feet. 7 or 8 feet if you can. Quail raised in an aviary style setting become very powerful flyers. And while they won't intentionally fly into the walls or ceiling, if startled at night by some predator, they can flush right up into it and break their necks. You can also use a false ceiling of some sort of netting if you can't go up this high.

X2. I was referring to a bird with no conditioning. A bird that grows up in an aviary will be able to fly MUCH better than what i said above.
