Talks about a local couple raising chickens "under the radar". Don't let the term "Town of Shelby" fool you, these folks live in a rural residential area out in a county that is primarily an agricultural base. In Wisconsin counties if you don't live within the limits of a City or Village then you live in a Township. Basically the county says if you live in any residential area livestock is not allowed.

"While it might seem strange in our era to think of your urban neighbor keeping chickens, in another era it would have seemed strange that they couldn't."

This is so true. We've come so far from the origin of food, haven't we? Hopefully this will help spark a push to change the ordinance. The comment about "illegally harboring chickens" made me snicker

It may just be a "summer coop" , nothing more than a small hutch. They'd have to dig it out of a snow drift several times a winter.

My chicken coop and run arrive this week. I am rural residential in Wisconsin and am definitely going to be illegal. (Easier to apologize than to ask permission) In case I have to argue my case, I could use some documentation in favor of raising just hens in my backyard to show some precedent for the town board. Can anyone help me out?

There is a thread, Wisconsin Cheeseheads, come join us.

Have you found the ordinances for your area, and do they actually prohibit fowl? I'll lend a hand petitioning the board, if it comes to that.

It is easier to get forgiveness than permission

We've learned that already.
