There are other modes of transportation and means to move commerce that rely on fossil fuels and it seems only automobiles is the target. Electric will not work for ships, OTR trucks, airplanes, trains or diesel powered electricity plants. We are 100 plus years out on alternative energy replacing any current uses other than an auto, has anyone seen what electric cars look like after a wreck? they are plastic.

When they can overcome the law of reduction then maybe electric will work for modes of transport other than autos.. I prefer cleaner technology but not forced. The market will bear the cost as it always has look to the horse and buggy compared to the automobile. I see the leap in technology to be on that scale before it takes hold. We are trying to make apples out of oranges with electric and solar is too costly and limited as it cannot be stored. The only way I see electric working currently or in the future is by building more hydroelectric as once they are built then it is maintenance costs. Fat chance of that happening in the current state of affairs in this country. China is building a huge hydro electic dam and look at thier economy. The difference is they are doing it to survive and we are doing it to somehow be greener.

Oil may run out we really are not sure when though. We also only pump a fraction of the oil available as I understand.

The only real choice is to use less, if it is available energy will be used as long as a buck can be made from it.

I actually think hydrogen power is workable but I really do not know much about it. There is a thing called Gee technology and I have seen a model using it that runs on water and part fossil fuel.

You are arguing as if there is an alternative. Eventually, the oil will run out. Would you rather we start working on the problem now, or when we absolutely have no other choice?

ETA that article was all over the board, they have no better guess than I do, I have drilled a few wells in my lifetime and can say with certainty that I really had no clue how much water I would get other than from well log reports. I think that if you drill deep enough you will hit oil. :lol:Did not read the link but I will assume another "scientific study"? Ok maybe I will take a look... unscientifically of course.

Sometime between now and 2050, according to Google. http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2005/apr/21/oilandpetrol.news

If
you don't expect to live for 40 more years, then maybe this really is completely irrelevant to you. Unless it runs out sooner, of course.

Forgive me for being ignornant about science, can Earth manufacture more oil and coal?

OR that is ALL that the Earth can provide is what is there. Once it is gone, its gone forever.

I figured with all that magma/lava deposits in the core of our planet, we would probably have endless supply of liquid rock to turn in to coal, while we can convert coal to heat and extract the oil for gas/fuel.

If we run out, time to find another planet to rob!

I would call it forced commerce. We are taking away this toy, because it's old and icky and you will either buy the toy we tell you to, or you will do without.....That's the thought process of the ecomovement and the current administration. Tyranical would be the word.

Sort of like the Cash for Clunkers debacle.....Send millions of dollars worth of perfectly good vehicles to the junkyard, and remove all of the potential commerce of used cars and the used parts industry, just so that people would have to buy new.

Either it's a continual evolutionary process, or it was a one time shot. It's a stagnant planet or a growing planet.

I have one question for those who say that oil was a one time shot....Which came first, the La Brae tarpits or the animals which fell into them?
