Interesting article in Science

The La Brae Tar Pits came first, with the oil forming hundreds of millions of years ago and seeping to the top about 40,000 years ago. The oldest fossils found are from about 35,000-40,000 years ago, most from the last ice age. The oil was laid down millions of years before that.

While this has absolutely nothing to do with the scientific method, or scientific studies...I will address a couple of things brought up here...

Fossil fuels are finite. While the earth may be producing more, the time line is hundreds of millions of years to make more, and we will run out in a much shorter period. We have large supplies of natural gas, and can make forms of natural gas from human, animal and plant waste. The technology for running vehicles on natural gas is out there, and is being used worldwide. Many cities and school districts buses run on natural gas. About 45% of oil usage in this country goes to personal travel: planes and cars. If only commercial fleets were converted to natural gas, the oil savings would be tremendous. It also burns cleaner.

You have to stop with pesky facts and figures and science. Some people believe that more oil is being made, and just "believing" that is enough to keep it coming. Don't you know the way the world REALLY works?

But seriously....yes...that's the point. If we find a better way to move people around (or allow them to move themselves around) that uses less fossil fuels, the difference will be huge.

Anyway...let's go back to talking about animal behavior studies. I find them much more interesting.

Royd maybe you need to think about oil a little differently.

You always go on and on.... and on.. about spending more money than we have. Well, if we're using oil faster than the planet can produce it shouldn't you hold the same concern you do about government spending to help poor kids?

I have an idea, why don't we all go get super educated work in a bar like Cheers where everyone knows your name for minimum wage and convince people we know more because it is logical, ride our bicycle like in the Queen song to work and solve all the uneducated peoples' problems for them whether they want us to or not, maybe even put the oil back in the ground and do it in a way better than the way it was put there so we can feel good and justify our subsidised non-payment school loans that are supporting our existence. We would not need oil then. I thought the world according to the latest study was coming to an end in 2012 anyhow.

I can't help but think you are making a joke to divert from the fact your logic is backed into a real corner. I agree with you about airliners and gas and all that.. but the fact that our planet is consuming oil at a rate way higher than the planet can produce it is a very real event, and while technology now may not be feasible... who knows what capabilities we will have in ten years and beyond.
