If you get a peacock or two, be prepared to jump out of your bed at 4 in the morning to a loud screaming noice that you will swear your neighbor is doing a bloody hatchet job on his wife.

Do the coturnix look different from one another or all alike? I admit I haven't looked at many pictures or figured that out yet. Can they run free or do you have to pen them up? I guess my limitation would be having to pen something up to keep it from going back to the wild - which is what I think of a Bobwhite doing or a pheasant. I would want birds that want to stick around their hen house voluntarily. Of course, my experience is pretty short and even what I do have could leave as this is my first year raising them from hatchlings. Maybe the second generation won't be as tame or loyal to home - not sure.

deerman, you have the most kinds I can imagine a person having! Have you maintained such a various interest a long time without quitting?

Will not get a peacock because so many people say they're very noisy. However, the guineas can do their share of screeching as well if they get a mind to.

They will stay close, but not like chickens. Depending on the variety, they are different. But the males/females of one type will look similar if your breeding true.

I have turkeys, quail, guineas, pheasants, and chickens. I am hoping to add ducks and geese and partridge.

They are each neat in their own way. Turkeys have really cool personalities and I think are very elegant. They seem to be very contemplative.

The quail (coturnix and bob white) are friendly. But they live in pens, as do my pheasants. As do my turkeys.

My pheasants are the most distant, I got them as adults. But, they are really neat. They really like sweet fruit, like red grapes and persimmons.

I am new to having poultry and got all but one chicken this past year.

I like having lots of different kinds, even just to try it to see what they're like to have.

Mine are for meat, except for my breeders. So that makes it nice that I have some that I can get attached to.

Peacocks make the call during breeding season. Not as bad as guineas. Sure people hear mine far away.

It does seem weird to put a true farm yard, meat bird in with the really tiny critters.

I wouldn't consider birds I have to pen up but I like reading about them.

I've considered emus. But Laura says not until we fence more land.

We'll get quineas eventually for additional tick control but I'd like them to have their own coop. Or have an additional mixed coop.

I'd never have a peacock. Used to live near some and worked at a Zoo. Never would be to early to hear that racket again.

I like guinea noise, go figure.

I really love turkey noises.

And I don't have neighbors so all is well in the noise category on that end.

Wow, deerman, you're amazing in my book with all those years devoted! I admire people who maintain an interest in things and don't let other "things", be it people or literally other things, get in the way.

I haven't found my ducks and geese to be very personable - they mostly run the other way and avoid me unless I'm doing something they like, like filling baby pool or feeding them. They're nice to look at though, and that's a good enough reason to me to keep them. They're good about not wandering far and I hope that doesn't change. i'm pretty close on one side to another neighbor's pasture and barn, though he doesn't use either, really.

I also like my turkeys best and indeed, find them contemplative too. My best friend could be a turkey. Nice being in a place where - yes - we all like birds. I have no idea why some people think that's STRANGE or can't appreciate how truly beautiful pictures of birds can be.
