I just had to give my Polish roo away, so before he left, I set 5 of his eggs under my broody silkie. Im very interested in what the mixes will look like. 2 eggs, which I candled and are forming, are from his favorite lady, a brown leghorn. 2 eggs are from gold laced wynadottes, one possibly with an austrolorpe, and one abnty egg, that will either be a cochin or silkie. What do you think these mixes could turn out looking like?

I hope you post pics of what you end up with!

The little gal in the foreground here is the result of a cross from my blue polish roo (see my avatar) and one of my layer hens. Not sure which one though - we had golden laced wyandotte, barred rock, black australorp and brahma all running around at the time she hatched. She sure is funky lookin!

One of our oddest crosses came about when one of the Belgian Bearded hens fell in love with our golden laced Polish roo. She followed him around everywhere! Looked like a little groupie. Their chicks showed a crazy color dimorphism: hens were gold with black crests, black spangling on the breast, black chevrons on the hackle, and black irregular not-quite-penciling on the wings. Roos were deep orange with the black mostly limited to the tails, flights, and some spangling. The roos had giant double combs and small crests. Both sexes had lightly feathered shanks, and in size they were about halfway between Mum and Dad. They were very lively birds; I had to re-home all but one when they took to invading the neighbor's yard.

They are beautiful, and the way they feathered out was a delightful surprise. I'm sure, though, that serious breeders on the forum are looking at this combination and saying "AAAAAGH!"

I don't blame them--I mean, what an insane combination of breeds!

I don't think the combination would breed true. There is so much weirdness involved, birds with totally different traits, some dominant, some recessive. What we're seeing here is quite literally "half from papa and half from mum", genetics-wise. But if it was taken to F2, I think we'd get a total mishmash of traits and they wouldn't look anything like their parents; some might more resemble their grandparents.

It might be possible to develop a breed that looked like this and bred true, but it would have to be started on different stock that had a little more in common with each other, I think. That would be an amazing project!

Yeah it definently would not be easy but it would be fun.I want to make my own breed but it will have to wait till have more room and alot more knowledge about genetics.
