Interesting sudden change in behavior of a chicken

The low growl is a warning or alert depending on the situation.
Bottom line: If she is pecking you, she sees you as below her in the pecking order.
She was putting you in your place
Is she the dominant hen in the flock? .

Peck her back, as suggested. Dont have to hurt her, just let her know whos boss.

And be prepared to live with the fact that she may no longer like being handled. Or she might. They all have verying personalities and that personality can change completely once they mature.

Yes you have to speak their language. Chickens understand pecking order and who is the top and who is the bottom. They establish this order by literally pecking. I prefer my chickens see me as the nice human that brings them food and not a chicken but sometimes they get confused and think they can peck me, usually when they are maturing. I have never had a mature hen peck me. I think of it like the teenage phase. Yes it does work, I don't have to repeat my pecks back very many times.

Interesting

I have read all posts in your thread and like I stated your pullet is looking at you as bellow her in the pecking order.
I enjoy my birds from a distance. Not sure if your looking for another answer? Chickens understand other chickens...Change your relationship with her and enjoy her and your other birds for what they are, Chickens.
Being your new to Chickens and started this thread looking for answers?? Don't feel so threatened by replies you may not like.
We all post our experiences and what works with our own flocks and the natural instincts of Chickens..

So enjoy your birds...I will not post back to your thread..
Hope you find the answer your looking for.....
