Internal bleeding green? and How do you make crop sling?

I performed crop surgery two days ago https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=107700

Now under the skin is turning a greenish color. The crop was pretty mangled, is it bleeding under the skin? Or is the crop dying inside?

Also because the crop was so stretched out it seems like any water he drinks is pooling there so I thought compressing with a crop sling might help?
I tried making one with a piece of gauze held on with a strip of stocking but I could not figure out how to tie it and make it tight to support crop. Anyone know how?

He is still acting fine and alert and crowing. No blood in poo.
Any other way to make sure he is not in pain?

its green? Sounds like maybe a really bad infection or gangreen perhaps ....I read other threads where others have done surgery and in recovery stage it was never green. Is he on antibiotics? I dont think he's supposed to have any hard foods yet.

I'm dealing with crop issues on my girl but didnt have to resort to surgery (yet) thankfully. MissPrissy helped me through it all via the oil, ACV and soft food stages. Thankfully my girl is doing okay so far and hopefully she'll continue to do so without surgery.

Yes, I hope your girl does fine with out surgery, it seems like oil and massage work for most cases so you should be good. I also read that one person in addition would have his bird fast (imagine just water) for a day to help empty crop.

To learn from me, if the crop does get enlarged, the sooner you can get it down the better. All my complications are because his crop was so stretched out. After i emptied it, it hung slack about 3 inches, I had to stuff it back in.

I have been keeping a very close eye on Phoebe (my rooster), it really looks like blood or bruising has pooled on the bottom of the crop and I can see the dark color through the skin. Right now it doesn't look infected or smell bad. The problem is the area of concern is under the skin and the skin looks really good, the incision site is fine and not even red.
He is on Baytril which someone just said was a good choice for birds.
I don't think I could open him back up.
He is still acting fine, seems a little bored restless and keeps looking out the window.

) she's out there honking away this morning and her crop was pretty empty this morning, just smidge of a lump but I'll keep going as instructed.

I know blood isnt supposed to be greenish, maybe it's bruising

that you're seeing underneath? I dont know - I've never done surgery on a chicken - I've had surgery myself several times so I'm basing it off of that, like muscle bruises and therefore, changes colors before it completely heals.

I hope he gets better and soon. I'm sure others that have done this surgery will chime in. Perhaps its best to just ask your vet...?

Hi,
we did surgery on our hen a couple of weeks ago for this (my grandfather did it and he is a surgeon). There were two layers of skin. The crop skin and the outer skin. We put stitches in both of them. The stuff we cleaned out was really nasty and green. Anti-fungal took care of that (nystatin). I'm wondering if you closed up the inner layer, or if the stuff is leaking out and there is still a hole in the crop. If so you will have to open the bird up again and this time close both flaps. Make sure to irrigate with a syringe full of water and get the surfaces as clean as possible. If part of the skin is dead, you will have to cut it and get two healthy surfaces to sew together.

Phoebe is getting better!! The greenish dark spot is shrinking!!! It must have just been blood and bruising through his yellow skin, it looked so scary, like I thought tissue was dying or gangrene, but the dark area looks smaller today.
I know I am not out of the clear yet, but this give me some hope.
If I have to I will go back in like you say coopMOM.
It was so hard to clean away all the sand and grit so I am worried about those bits stuck between skin and crop. Luckily it was not sour.
He wants to eat a lot more today but I still don't want to stretch out his new crop too much.
Also, his crop area is still pretty large and round, I don't know if it will ever shrink back.
I am concerned for the way I stitched it up and had to stuff it back in that there is a pocket of skin that won't empty.
Started to massage it a little.

Anyone ever make a crop sling? Any thoughts on trying to compress the crop area to empty?

green is a bruise. birds have different blood pigments than mammals. their bruises are a weird green to blue color, not the red purple of people. dead tissue is dark brown/black.
