Hi guys! Really don’t know what I should do! I have three chicks, one of them has been hatched for over a day now, very healthy little baby. Another egg has been chirping and pecking for 24hrs but has not even broke the shell. Seems like the poor chicken is pecking a lot! I’m worried that it’s trapped, it’s been like this for over a day now, should I start helping? I really don’t want to mess it up though, it’s my favorite egg. What’s your suggestions?

I myself don’t hatch chicks
I do ducklings though. If I don’t see an external pip by 24 hours after the internal I will make a safety hole
Not to big. Size of a sharpened pencil end
Then I wait to see if baby will external itself. ( most times they do ) but the odd one I have ti assist
Sometimes they run out of air trying but with the safety hole yoy give them the air and they can keep working
I know with chicks it’s suppose to be faster then ducklings for hatching
Hopefully this will bump your post and other chicken Hatcher’s can help out

Thank you for the advice!

I agree with the safety hole, they need a lot of oxygen to pip and zip.
I guess I was too late, I made the safety hole when the chick had gone quiet and still no movement this morning, I broke open the egg very slowly this evening and the chick looked like it had been dead for awhile.

Sorry you lost the baby
We learn from each hatch and gain more confidence to know when ti help
I know many say don’t help let nature take its course
That’s not how I hatch my eggs
My first batch I lost one helping to much to soon. The second baby I hesitated as I was scared to help to soon and lost her too
But after that I got great advice and guidance for the next 3 that needed help
The 3 that did get full assists are now over a year old and strong healthy birds. Never had an issue with them
They were all in the wrong position to hatch and that’s my fault
I got so excited to have fertile eggs I didn’t think about the size
Mom was newer to laying and out of the 7 eggs the 5 smallest all had to be helped. Only the two bigger hatched themselves
Don’t get to down as hatching is a learning curve

If it couldn't hatch on its own, there is quite a good chance it had something wrong with it.
So even if you had done more, it may not have made it. So don't beat yourself up about it :hugs I'm sorry it didn't make it.
Thank you, this has been a good first time learning process.

Wow that sounds like a crazy hatch. Thank you ! I was expecting all weren’t going to make it, this is my first time. I have two chicks now, I’m glad I have at least afew. I’ll try to help a little quicker if I KNOW for sure that it needs help next time.
