Interrupted Incubation with Broody Hen

The mother hen is a Speckled Sussex, a first time mom, and the chick is also a SS and hers.

Sitting hens are likely to get confused about which nest is hers when she comes off the nest to eat, drink, and poop. This is even more likely to happen when other hens in your flock can get into your setting hen's nest to lay while the sitting hen is absent.

A little update - the chick is 3 weeks old now, living together with his mom and it is rather cold here (-12°C). The coop is insulated however it is ventilated quite heavily.

I am proud to announce that the little autumn/winter Speckled Sussex chick is a pullet :) Here's how she's grown up at 9 weeks and all the family together.
