Hi there! I have used these forums for years when googling questions to new problems, and now here I am. Hopefully I can make helpful contributions when needed.
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Got my first 13 buff orpingtons when someone I knew was moving across the country. We had recently moved to a run down farm and figured why not? They lived in a box on my porch for longer than they should have before the coop was done.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 160
(3) What breeds do you have? I now raise started pullets, so currently 95 chicks are: Gold Laced Wyandotte, Black Copper Maran, Blue Copper Maran, Paint Sussex, Bielefelder and Cream Legbars. In my layer flock I have all those plus Buff Orpingtons, Buff Brahmas, Production Red, Silkies, barnyard mixes, Black Jersey Giants, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Americanas, Prairie Blue Bell, Silverudd, and Guineas.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Their personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Horses, Highpark and Highland cows.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have five kids, including a set of twins. We use regenerative methods when possible, raising Angus, Highland and Highpark cows as well as our chickens and meat birds seasonally. We also have two horses: Missy (QH) and Cargan (Gypsy Vanner). Or dog, Angus, and cats, Scottie and Dexter, are all named after cow breeds.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome c
ommunity?
I have known about it for a decade probably. Literally I have always found an answer for the hard or unusual chicken question. But wasn't sure I had much to contribute until I saw someone post about a new hybrid a local hatchery is selling that I am currently raising. I could help with that!
