Hello, all! I am currently attempting to get a variance to raise ducks on our half acre property (the township currently requires an acre to keep ducks, but only 0.2 acres to keep chickens). I have a chicken egg allergy but can eat duck eggs, so hopefully we will be allowed to get ducks for laying!

As I said, we are on half an acre, but the bottom of our yard where we border our rear neighbor is wooded and secluded. We have coyotes and all the typical predators so will be keeping the ducks enclosed in a 100-150 sq foot enclosure with a pool and a duck house. I would like to start with four ducks (asking to have up to six in the variance). Any suggestions on the quietest, most prolific layers who would be happiest in an enclosure? I am considering khaki campbells and cayugas. Had thought of pekins but it seems like they are likely too loud and I don’t want to annoy our neighbors. Any other suggestions I have overlooked?

Hoping to eventually have lots more questions once I get my ducks, but until then I just need to patient and hopeful that I will get that variance!

Hello and welcome! Thanks for joining us.

I had Cayuga's who laid really well and were fairly quiet except for my Lily who would make a huge racket for no reason. Muscovy ducks are known for being quiet but don't lay many eggs. Khaki Campbell's are also really good layers but not sure how noisy they are. Best of luck!

I am always in favor of runner ducks. I don't think they are noisy, and although they take a winter break, they lay almost daily once spring arrives. Also, they are easy to contain since flight is nearly a foreign concept for them.

Good luck getting the variance, and welcome to BYC!
