Hi, I been dropping in on BYC and reading for several months with great interests. We have been involved in serious gardening, not just victory garden of sort. It's more of a urban homesteading. Front yard is a veggie and flower garden, veggie garden in backyard and on the side. Soo its only appropriate that we get several chicken at some point. Well that happened about three days ago. We have two brahma, dark and light and one Ameraucana or is it easter egg chicken. What I wanted were wyandottes but not to be. Next on the list was four Brahmas but shoot, who would have expected that feed and supply store would sell out the chicks so fast. When we got there, they only had one dark brahma, one white brahma and four Ameraucana left. So now we are under pressure to build a small coop and a run for our little babies. Tad strange too in that my partner has childhood memories of growing up with chicken. Some funny stories about that and I too had about 50 chicks all at one time. another crazy story about that too. For whatever reason, we already had half a dozen or so feeders laying around. I guess it was meant to be. As for my username, well we foster both cats and dogs. currently, we have way too many cats and two dawgs. The cats will absolutely NOT harm the chicken. Cats are strictly indoors. Anyway, I hope to learn from many of you and hope to contribute. I think I've cleaned out the water "dish" six or so times today. I don't mind. I don't want my babies to get sick. One more thing, we are into deep organic, all natural food. All of our veggies are heirloom varieties. We also save many of the seeds for the following year etc. Our chicken will be au natural. We make our own jam, marmalade, canned veggies, dried herbs, bake our own bread... Toward self sufficiency.
