Intro of grit

Almost all chick starter products have grit in it. Also gryeyes said it best Construction sand is the best you can also offer them clumps of dirt from the yard they will find grit in it. I suggest this anyhow if you feed medicated starter and don't allow them access to dirt. the dirt helps them build an immunity to cocci. If you medicate them without the exposal to dirt your really treating nothing (assuming your very clean in keeping there brooder area tidy) hope this might help.

I was told to sprinkle grit into the chick feed right off the bat...but only as if I were adding pepper to something...so it would be up to 5% of the feed. Is this correct?

I wasn't sure either. I feel their crops to make sure they are full after eating and then have gone down by the next day. (I read the thread on sour crop and that freaked me out! Cutting open my girl's crops ... I don't want to go there.) So I started giving them half an egg and a couple tablespoons of yogurt a day when they were about a week or so. I bought the chick grit and put it in a shaker and sprinkle it right on top of the snack. Now they're a little over three weeks and today they ate bananas and tomatoes. (Last week they turned their noses up to it.) I also give them a tiny bit of cracked corn... just enough so they know when they see me, I've got the good stuff.

I'm new to all this, just been doing a lot of reading with the helpful pros on here. Lots of different opinions sometimes, so I go slow and see how it goes. So far, so good.
